Jea O. Evangelista
It was a cold night of November, my
mother gave birth to a beautiful little girl. It was the 30th of the
year 1993, Christmas carol started playing in the delivery room, Dingdong..dingdong..
goes the Christmas bells, “DingDong!” exclaimed my mother . “We will call her
Dingdong!” Our family has a habit of giving weird nicknames to children. That
was the day my life began. My weird, crazy, yet joyful life.
Childhood years
Five exciting years passed, I was in Kinder II, in Agape
Child Development Center. It was August, the month where we celebrate the
national day “BuwanngWika”. We were expected to dress up for the day. My mother
picked out a beautiful kimona for me to wear. I tried it on, I liked it at
first but after a few moments the dress started giving me itch. It was an
annoying feeling, I just wasn’t comfortable. I was scratching everywhere.
It aggravated me that on the way to the gymnasium where we
were going to do the program, I took it off and decided to not wear it again. I
didn’t saw it but my mother was watching me, she too was annoyed, but with me.
So I threw a tantrum because she keeps on forcing me to wear the itchy dress
and then, a stick! My mother saw a stick and hit me with it. It wasn’t that
painful but I still cried.
With a teary eyes, I wore the dress went to the stage and
performed my piece but still itching from the damn dress. Then I saw my mother,
she was looking at me, smiling and proud, that made the whole experience
wonderful.
At twelve years old, I was having interest in fishes that I
requested for a space so that I could take care of some fishes. My father told
me that there are some wood that we can use to make the containers for the
fishes. So my cousin and I built some crates and placed plastic bags inside and
it worked! We can put water in it and does not spill.
We were just missing something, the fishes! My cousin knew
a place where we can buy fishes. On weekend, we went to the place he knew and
bought small fishes to go in our made-up pond. We used our savings to buy the
fishes.
After, we placed the fishes in their new home, little
fishes in different colors. We took care of them until they got big and after
several months our fishes multiplied. We were so proud that we brag about them
to our classmates and neighbors. They got interested and went to our house,
they also want to take care of fishes after that visit. So we had a brilliant
idea. How about we sell some of our fishes?
So we did, we sold some of our fishes to them, small fishes
priced at fifteen pesos and the bigger ones are twenty pesos. It was a very
good business. We sold so many fishes that we were nearly out of stock, so we
started to buy lots of fishes from the place we bought them before and sold
them again to our friends. We earned so much just by selling fishes. It was a
great experience. I had enough money to buy the foods I want for school.
My childhood was very memorable, those years formed me to
become who I am in the present. My family had lots of unforgettable memories
when I was a child. Christmas is my favorite season of all. Christmas carols,
Christmas parties, the presents, the gatherings, and the Christmas family
dinner with the whole clan made the season more joyful.
Teenage years
High School. The most exciting years in the life of a
person. The adventure, the excitement, the drama, the fun and of course the
romance. There was a little something of everything. Four years in high school
was like a lifetime. A lot of friends met and people acquainted and teachers
befriended. I was good in my studies, I didn’t skipped school, passed my
requirements and aced my examinations. I had a lot of memories made back when I
was in high school.
One of it was when I was in the 1st
year level, my classmates and I have a secret gathering place. It’s a secret so
I won’t tell you exactly where it is but I will describe it to you.
It is not far from our school, we
will just walk so we can get there, and it’s an abandoned house. It is
unfinished but it has foundations, a roof, a bathroom, (thank God it has a
bathroom!) and a mango tree. Aside from the bathroom, my favorite part was the
mango tree. After eating our lunch we would throw rocks at the fruits so that
they would fall and we could eat them, some would fall so hard that it would
crack but some were in good shape.
Before going there we would prepare
the things that we would need: Our lunch, so we would have a full stomach
before we embark on an adventure. A knife, to open the mango fruit that we have
collected. Salt, to complement the fruit. And an open mind, to see the
adventures ahead!
Those years are full of excitements,
and of course, adventures.
The Present
My life now has changed. From the child that was all fun
and games, the teenager who was looking for excitement in life, I am now a
person with dreams and passion. I am determined to finish my studies so I can
have a brighter future. I am looking forward on giving back to my parents. I am
envisioning a stable job and a beautiful home for my partner and me.
Jea O. Evangelista is now in
college. Taking up Bachelor of Science in Criminology. In the University of
Mindanao. Focused and determined to finish this course. Dreaming of a brighter
future for herself and her family.
This story has been twenty two years
in the making and is still continuing.

DESCRIPTIVE LETTER
To: UM
Maintenance Office
From: Jea O. Evangelista
Subject: Water Fountain Adding
I am a student of the University, I am
taking up Bachelor of Science in Criminology and I have a deftac subject. And I
have observed that when we are having a water break, the fountain there in the
GET building at 3rd floor near the deftac room is always low in
pressure. In that case, the line becomes long and there are a lot of students,
and we are in hurry.
In the future, would you please add one
water fountain in front of the deftac rooms because athletes needs water
supply.
Thank you very much.
